Aims and Objectives

The aim of The Academy is to equip it's students with all the tools needed to sustain a career as Professional Actors in the industry, with an emphasis on studying a broad spectrum of cultural art forms in Africa and around the globe, to analyse work from our own, and other cultures, and producing work from our own, and other cultures. This is to further enrich and enlighten the students to the vast array of rich stories to be told not just in Ghana, or Africa, but around the globe. Thus we educate ourselves about the world we live in, through the medium of theatre, film, radio, and all other art forms. We believe this will broaden the student’s mind, and will be of benefit to them both personally, and in the industry. On top of studying and producing work from our own culture, the students will also learn about the English speaking, contemporary and classical theatre to further broaden their artistic knowledge.

To share and celebrate our differences through the medium of acting, thus enriching the quality of the dramatic arts, both nationally and internationally
To provide the student actors with a vocal, physical, emotional, and imaginative training, this will push them to attaining their full potential.
To arm, and equip our actors with a broad scope of skills and knowledge needed to work in the entertainment industry, be it screen or theatre.
To incite the students into an awareness of the fact that the actor never stops learning, and of their own potential for growth, and for the need to passionately continue the learning process throughout their lives.
To design and build within the Academy actors who are open to exploring and discovering. We strive for actors to have a curious and inquisitive spirit within all they do, thus enriching and building on the potential of both student and tutor.
To establish in a wide variety of students as possible, an imbedded life-long commitment to the development of creativity within the actor, to enrich both their lives and their audience.
To acknowledge and push forward the ethos, goals, principles, and ethics which The K. Boateng Academy Of Performing Arts, stands by, thrives on, and teaches its students.

The Course is taught over six terms, 3 terms in the first year and 3 in the second. It roughly comes to around 13 weeks to make up a term. As acting is a very vigorous and rigorous profession, students should not expect as much holiday time as other courses that are not vocationally lead. You will get reasonable time off for all the major holidays.
Being creative is foremost in this course, as we passionately adhere to the belief that, innately, we all possess a creative soul. We therefore strive to unlock and release this creative potential in our actors through the course of the training. We will instil in the actor an ethos of play, which is essential for them, if they are to be totally open and connected to the environment and situation they are living in, when they are acting. This course aims to motivate, inspire, and challenge the actor to be free physically and mentally, leaving them to be alive in every moment while acting. So we set out in our training to fully realise in our students their imaginative capabilities, their truthfulness, emotional realism, and openness, combined with the fine tuning of the physical and vocal apparatus of an actor.

The under 19’s course was developed in our belief that you cannot put an age on talent. Therefore we created this course for young people who are already fired up about the arts, and are just not being given the opportunity to vent their creative talent. This course is just the vessel for such creative talent to be realised and unleashed to its full potential through the Two Year Acting course.

Voice - is taught in conjunction with related skills such as speech and sight-reading, and sometimes singing.
Singing - is taught chorally and forms an integrated strand of vocal studies.
Movement - is taught in context with character work, and basic acting. It will be integrated into most of the core skills.
Improvisation - seeks to engage and stimulate the actor's imagination through developing improvisational skills. It is a way of unlocking the actor physically, mentally and spiritually, so the core of the human being can be revealed to all watching.
Acting - introduces the actor to approaches to acting techniques explored by Stanislavski, and others after him. Though we undertake an in depth study of Stanislavski's systems of acting, we do not adhere to any one method of acting when training our actors,
Text/Dramaturgy - includes practical exploration of contemporary and classical text from Ghana, Africa, and around the globe.
Speech and Verse - actors will work on a classical and contemporary speech, and a poem to be presented to the in-house students.
Scene Study - students will learn the analytical methods and approaches needed to dissect any scene given to them. This is of particular benefit to attaining good sight-reading skills for an audition, and also how to dissect a play during rehearsals.
Animal Study - a practical study of specific animal behaviour, and how this is transferred into building the physicality of a character.
In-house Production - this will begin at the start of term 4 in the 2nd year of training.
Public Theatre Production - this will begin at the start of term 6 till the end of the course.
Showcase - the actors present monologues and short scenes of their own choice at the showcase to the public, and industry professionals.
